Kidney Stones in Primary Hyperoxaluria: New Lessons Learnt
2013
To investigate potential differences in stone composition with regard to the type of Primary Hyperoxaluria (PH), and in relation to the patient’s medical therapy (treatment naïve patients versus those on preventive medication) we examined twelve kidney stones from ten PH I and six stones from four PH III patients. Unfortunately, no PH II stones were available for analysis. The study on this set of stones indicates a more diverse composition of PH stones than previously reported and a potential dynamic response of morphology and composition of calculi to treatment with crystallization inhibitors (citrate, magnesium) in PH I. Stones formed by PH I patients under treatment are more compact and…
Compatibility between traditional ground layers and 3D printing materials
2018
Starting point of this work was the restoration of a Panel Painting depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds with a Saint Bishop, by an unknown author, stored in the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia di Palazzo Abatellis, in Palermo. It was decided to integrate a missing angular decorative element of the painting’s frame in order to restore the integrity of the frame by reverse engineering and 3D printing. Reintegration was feasible as the frame has a modular decorative pattern and the remaining three corners were available. Reverse engineering and 3D printing techniques have been used in order to find a solution according to the principles of recognition, reversibility and compatibility. Mo…
Evidence for Water-Tuned Structural Differences in Proteins: An Approach Emphasizing Variations in Local Hydrophilicity
2012
We present experimental evidence for the significant effect that water can have on the functional structure of proteins in solution. Human (HSA) and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) have an amino acid sequence identity of 75.52% and are chosen as model proteins. We employ EPR-based nanoscale distance measurements using double electron-electron resonance (DEER) spectroscopy and both albumins loaded with long chain fatty acids (FAs) in solution to globally (yet indirectly) characterize the tertiary protein structures from the bound ligands' points of view. The complete primary structures and crystal structures of HSA and as of recently also BSA are available. We complement the picture as we have re…
Lithium silicate admixture in mortars to be used as putty for limestone
2018
Marble is a very common material in artworks for its softness, relative isotropy and homogeneity and its characteristic waxy look that gives "life" to sculptures. Even if in geology the term "marble" refers to metamorphosed limestone, commonly the term ‘marble’ is used more broadly encompassing hard unmetamorphosed limestone that can be polished assuming a glossy aspect. In the restoration field when marble artworks have cracks that alter the smoothness of their surface, a putty is used to fill them, for both aesthetic and conservative reasons. Putties usually consist of epoxy resin mixed with marble powder. The use of a synthetic resin raises some doubts on compatibility and durability of …
